A special event is being staged to tell local people all about the next round of proposals for Felixstowe’s future – where you can find out what’s happening and have your say – and I would urge you to go along and make the most of the opportunity.
Suffolk Coastal District Council (as a landowner and leisure provider), together with Felixstowe Forward (the local coastal community team) and Visit Felixstowe would like to invite everyone to a free drop-in event at The Orwell Hotel on Friday 6 July from 1pm to 6pm. There will be displays and stands and the opportunity to talk to officers about what is proposed and to get answers to any questions you may have.
They will also welcome any feedback or other ideas too you might have about the next set of plans, from a new iconic leisure centre, to a Business Improvement District, new housing and infrastructure, and future ideas for the South Seafront.
Over the last few years, Felixstowe has seen a host of new developments, not all of them welcome. There have been improvements such as the revamping of the Spa Gardens, the pedestrianisation of Hamilton Rd, the new Pier Head and the developments at Martello Park, but they have come at a cost. And there are other areas that desperately need money spent, especially the Sea Rd, area that are still neglected– and some things that have happened in spite of local opposition such as the concreting over of the boating lake.
The general consensus is often that the council will do what it wants anyway – but they often site a lack of opposition or local apathy to support their decisions. There are some big changes being proposed – not least of which is knocking down the leisure centre and moving it to Eastward Ho, depriving us of not only a seafront facility but some much reduced green space in the process. There is also quite a lot of new housing being proposed – and if you are in the least bit concerned about any of these issues I would urge you to go along and make your feelings known
Helen Greengrass, Felixstowe Forward Change Director, said “In the past the annual engagement event in Felixstowe has been limited to businesses and community representatives. This year we felt we needed a different approach because there is so much going on that is important for the future prosperity of the town. This will be an opportunity for everyone to find out more and get involved. So please come along and join in”.
