At 10am the Mayor of Felixstowe, Nick Barber officially raised the Armed Forces flag outside the Town Hall in Felixstowe. This was followed by a short service at the seafront War Memorial in commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele.

Final preparations are now underway for Suffolk Armed Forces Weekend, hosted this year by Suffolk Coastal District Council in Felixstowe on Saturday and Sunday, 24 and 25 June. The event recognises the huge contribution made by our servicemen and women from the past until the present day – and also marks the 350th anniversary of the Dutch attack on Landguard Fort.

On Saturday, events will be centred on the Felixstowe Beachside Events Area, and include historical re-enactments, great live music, children’s fun, a thrilling air display and spectacular fireworks. On Sunday, the action moves to Landguard Fort, where up to 200 re-enactors from The Sealed Knot and English Civil War Society will re-create the last opposed seaborne invasion of England, and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. Expect a thrilling spectacle with cannon, muskets and swords.

The amazing Global Stars Aerobatic Team will be taking to the skies over Felixstowe and will perform both a spectacular formation and solo display over the sea at 3pm on Saturday. The team of British aerobatic champions past and present… Mark Jefferies, Chris Burkett, Tom Cassells and Michael Pickin are based at Little Gransden in Cambridgeshire and have flown many air displays and shows around the world. The Global Stars have just returned from a trip to China where they competed in the Formation Aerobatic Championships.

During the day on Saturday, the Kids Zone located on the Trim Trail field (next to the Felixstowe Beachside Events Area) will be open from 1000-1600. Admission will be free to everyone.

Alongside special competitions featuring teams of local cadets, young people and their families can join in the fun, with an assault course from the Felixstowe Leisure Centre, a climbing tower and high ropes, an indoor laser tag arena and beachcombing displays and mini walks with Beach Bonkers.
